Why a rule of thumb is not enough
"Buy a convertible in winter" is a starting point, not a measurement. The pattern differs from car to car, and a car whose price has been climbing makes whichever months its early sales fell in look cheap. That is the trend, not the season, and a naive month-by-month average gets it wrong.
How the months are measured
- Every sale is normalised to the car's typical mileage, so a month that happened to draw high-mileage cars does not look like a bargain.
- Each sale is compared with the median of all the car's sales within six months either side of it. That strips out the price trend, however it moved.
- The median of those ratios is taken for each calendar month, so one unusual sale cannot swing it.
Only where the data supports it
A seasonal pattern needs at least 20 sales spread over a year and a half, with at least four months holding three sales or more. Cars below that get no seasonal read rather than a guessed one.
